How it Works
- 1
Choose whether you want to calculate from Net to Gross or from Gross to Net.
- 2
Enter the amount. Both comma and period are accepted.
- 3
Select the country. The standard rate is pre-selected, the reduced rates are listed next to it.
- 4
Net, Tax, and Gross are shown immediately below.
The Formula
From Net to Gross: Gross = Net × (1 + Tax Rate / 100). At 20%, €100 net becomes €120 gross.
From Gross to Net: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Tax Rate / 100). With 20%, €120 gross becomes €100 net again. A common mistake is to simply deduct 20% from the gross amount. This results in €96 instead of €100.
Standard and Reduced Rates
Each country has a standard rate and usually one or two reduced rates, for example, for groceries, books, accommodation, or restaurant meals. In Austria, these are 20%, 13%, and 10%; in Germany, 19% and 7%; in Switzerland, 8.1%, 3.8%, and 2.6%.
Which rate applies to a service is regulated by the respective Value Added Tax Act. If in doubt, consult your tax advisor.
What to Include on an Invoice
When selling to businesses in the EU, include the following on the invoice:
- Net amount per tax rate
- the applied tax rate and the tax amount
- for tax-exempt services or reverse charge, a note on the tax exemption
- the issuer's VAT number, and the recipient's VAT number for amounts above certain thresholds
